Pitstop at VitraHaus

VitraHaus is a great destination for design enthusiasts in the Basel area. I stumbled upon this gem by chance during a visit to the renowned Baselworld watch fair (when it still existed). I used to travel by car from Munich to Basel for the event, passing through the town of Weil am Rhein where VitraHaus is situated. Following a busy week at the fair, it was always a pleasure to take a break at VitraHaus, which offers a peaceful setting surrounded by nature.

VitraHaus is a unique building that serves as both a showroom and a flagship store for the Swiss furniture company Vitra. Located in Weil am Rhein, Germany, VitraHaus was designed by the renowned Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and opened in 2010.

The building is shaped like a stack of houses, with a total of five floors and a roof terrace. The individual “houses” are connected by a central staircase, which also serves as a gallery space for displaying art and design objects.

The interior of VitraHaus is designed to showcase Vitra’s furniture and home accessories in a domestic setting. Each floor is arranged like a different room in a house, with carefully curated arrangements of furniture, lighting, and decorative objects. This allows visitors to experience the products in a more natural and immersive way than they might in a traditional furniture store.

Great place to find inspiration for your home.

In addition to the showroom, VitraHaus also includes a café, a design shop, and a space for temporary exhibitions. The building has won numerous awards for its innovative design and has become a popular destination for design enthusiasts from around the world.

The shop on the ground floor of the VitraHaus offers a wide selection of design objects, home accessories and publications. These include select furniture designs by major designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Jasper Morrison, Sori Yanagi and Hella Jongerius, miniatures and faithful re-editions from the Vitra Design Museum, as well as offers from other design manufacturers such as Tom Dixon, Alessi, Hay and many more.
