MB&F introduces the new automotive-inspired machine MHM8 Mark 2 Blue with glossy sapphire-blue body panels reminiscent of car paints. Details, live photos, and prices below.
Last year MB&F announced a new chapter of MB&F’s automotive saga: the HM8 Mark 2, with launch editions in White and Green – the latter limited to 33 pieces. Now that the 2023 Green edition is sold out, it was time to introduce a new 2024 Limited Edition of 33 pieces, the HM8 Mark 2 Blue – with glossy sapphire-blue body panels recalling car paints, both technically and aesthetically.
The connexion between MB&F and automotive design runs deep: it goes back to MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser’s childhood, when he dreamt of becoming a car designer. Max turned to watchmaking instead… but that dream has generated a series of Machines inspired by sports cars. The HM5 took cues from the legendary supercars of the 70’s; the HMX, our 10th Anniversary piece, just had to be car-inspired as well; and the HM8 ‘Can-Am’ paid tribute to the racing cars of the Canadian-American Racing Championship. The HM8 Mark 2 is a “best of” from its predecessors: HM5’s supercar styling, HMX’s compact size, and HM8’s very apparent mechanics. Placed within an aerodynamic sandwich of CarbonMacrolon, grade 5 titanium and hyper-complex sapphire crystal, the HM8 Mark 2 is a true supercar for the wrist.
The case is crafted from Grade 5 titanium with blue CarbonMacrolon, a material developed specifically for MB&F. It is a composite material composed of a polymer matrix injected with carbon nanotubes, which add strength and rigidity. Carbon nanotubes offer superior tensile strength and stiffness than traditional carbon fibre reinforcing. MB&F’s CarbonMacrolon® is a solid material that is hard and can be coloured, polished, bead-blasted, lacquered, satin-finished.
The new HM8 Mark 2’s deep, iridescent sapphire blue is obtained from metallic pigments of mineral origin, the same as those found in metallic car paint. They come as a powder that is incorporated into the translucent resin according to a very specific (and secret) protocol involving incorporation time, mixing temperature, mixing speed and duration.
Under the hood lies a three-dimensional horological engine, comprised of a jumping hour and trailing minutes module developed in-house by MB&F, powered by a Girard-Perregaux base movement. This automatic movement consists of 247 components and has a power reserve of 42 hours.
The new HM8 Mark 2 Blue retails for CHF 68,000 + VAT (USD 78,000 / EUR 70,000 + taxes). Deliveries of the first pieces to MB&F retailers start now and you’ll also find it at the MB&F eShop: https://shop.madgallery.ch/products/hm8-mark-2
