Tudor has expanded the Black Bay GMT line with a new dial in opaline. Although it’s not an entirely new watch, the combination of the opaline dial with the Black Bay GMT is quite appealing and adds a fresh touch to the collection. Opaline isn’t quite white, instead there’s a slight silvery hint to the dial. Through a galvanic process, a matte white-grey finish is applied to the dial of the Black Bay GMT, and the marker surrounds are darkened to create a noticeable contrast.
Other than a new dial, everything is the same in this watch. The Black Bay GMT model comes with a steel case that is 41mm in diameter and is waterproof up to 200 metres (660 ft). The rotatable bezel in deep blue and burgundy colour scheme has a matte finishing. The twelve daylight hours are printed on the burgundy section and the night-time hours on the blue. Additional time zones are indicated by a red “Snowflake” GMT hand, which rotates around the dial in 24 hours, as well as a bidirectional rotatable bezel that is also calibrated for 24 hours.
Inside is the Manufacture Calibre MT5652 with integrated GMT function, jumping hour hand and retrograde date setting that was developed by Tudor for the Black Bay GMT models. It has a power reserve of 70 hours.
For the Black Bay GMT, Tudor has selected a black strap with a woven burgundy accent matching the bezel. The model is also available fitted with a stainless-steel bracelet inspired by the folding riveted bracelets made by Tudor in the 1950s and 1960s. The price of the version with a stainless steel bracelet is €4,210, while the version on the textile strap will cost you €3,900.
While I’m not typically drawn to white dials, I’ve noticed that opaline dials often catch my eye due to their milky, smooth color that gives them an attractive and clean look. Although the black version of the Black Bay GMT will still remain as the main watch in the collection, having a nice alternative is always a good thing.
