Earlier this year, TAG Heuer released the Carrera Chronograph Seafarer, a watch derived from the rich maritime history of the brand. Following the modern revival of the “Skipper” regatta timer, this model resurrects an entirely different, highly specialized nautical complication: the tide indicator. Details, live pictures and pricing below.

The lineage of this specific watch stretches back to 1949, when Heuer originally developed a watch called the “Solunar” for the high-end American sporting goods retailer Abercrombie & Fitch. Walter Haynes, then-president of Abercrombie & Fitch, conceived the initial idea for a tide-tracking timepiece and commissioned Heuer to build it. A young Jack Heuer even assisted in its production, consulting his school physics teacher to design more precise gear ratios for the tide calculation mechanism. Heuer subsequently packaged this technology into a multi-register chronograph called the Seafarer, which remained a highly coveted staple for sailors until the mid-1970s. Now, 77 years later, the complication returns inside TAG Heuer’s modern “glassbox” architecture.
Understanding the Complication
The standalone centerpiece of the Seafarer is the dedicated tide indicator sub-dial located at the 9 o’clock position. Colored in a contrasting teal blue and yellow lacquer, the indicator is adjusted using a specialized, “TIDE”-engraved pusher on the left side of the case at 9 o’clock.
Pressing this button advances a internal disc divided into quadrants. Once calibrated to the local high and low tide times of a specific port or coastal area, the mechanism takes over. The disc makes one full rotation every 29.53125 days—tracking the exact length of a lunar month—to continually show local tidal highs, lows, and optimum sailing windows.

Case, Dial, and “Intrepid Teal” Aesthetics
The watch utilizes TAG Heuer’s contemporary 42mm bezel-free glassbox design, featuring a domed sapphire crystal that curves sharply down into the dial flange. This design creates high edge-to-edge visibility, a necessity when reading tracking tools on a pitching boat.

The Case: The 316L stainless steel case measures 14.40mm thick with a 48.60mm lug-to-lug distance. Despite its complex build and pusher integration, it retains a water resistance rating of 100 meters.
The Dial: An opalin champagne backdrop decorated with 18k yellow gold-plated applied indexes and matching hands.
The Accents: The sub-dials and hands feature highlights of “Intrepid Teal”. This distinct color is named after the Intrepid, the yacht that won the 1967 America’s Cup and originally inspired Jack Heuer to create the first Skipper chronograph.
The TH20-04 Manufacture Calibre
Inside of the Carrera Chronograph Seafarer beats the newly developed Calibre TH20-04.
This automatic in-house movement was specifically engineered to integrate the specialized lunar tide disc alongside a fully integrated traditional chronograph layout. Built with an upscale column-wheel and vertical clutch mechanism, it eliminates any stutter or jump when starting the stopwatch hands. The movement features an openworked winding rotor shaped like the TAG Heuer shield and delivers a 80-hour power reserve.

The new bracelet
True to its heritage aesthetic, the Seafarer is delivered on a newly engineered seven-row stainless steel bracelet designed in a classic “beads of rice” style. The bracelet features alternating fine-brushed and polished links paired with a secure folding clasp.

For a more utilitarian look, the watch also ships with an additional textured, rigging-style beige sports strap lined with matching Intrepid Teal.
