During my visit to Nomos in Glashütte last autumn, I also took a moment to photograph two very cool watches, the Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date Sky and Sand, that I personally liked very much when they were released. These watches embody a perfect blend of sporty design and elegant style, mixed with fresh colors and an automatic movement inside. They were presented as ideal summer timepieces but are versatile enough to be worn throughout the year.
The Nomos Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date comes with two different dials: sky blue and sand colored. I’m still debating which one I like more. The Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date is a sporty and robust watch suitable for use in the pool or even for light diving. An angular crown guard secures the screw-down crown and its winding mechanism from impacts. The case back is made of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and is screwed down to make it waterproof. Although robust and water resistant to 200 meters, equipped with and automatic caliber, date mechanism, and glass back, Ahoi sky and sand remain elegantly proportioned. At just 9.9 millimeters in height, these watches sit perfectly on the wrist—and under any cuff. What’s more: their classic diameter of 38.5 millimeters provides perfect proportions for (almost) any wrist.
With all the features described above that make this watch a true sports instrument, it still looks very elegant and slim and pairs well with a shirt and a pair of chinos. This watch can easily be your daily casual timepiece or the one for active weekends.
Both watches offer great legibility, as their sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating on both sides. Large numerals and clear color contrasts make both the sand-colored and the sky-blue sports versions of Ahoi easy to read. The date window at three o’clock clearly shows when the next vacation can start. And thanks to luminescent superluminova, the time is just as legible in low-light conditions.
Neomatik date caliber DUW 6101
The golden lettering “neomatik” refers to the innovative DUW 6101 automatic movement from Deutsche Uhrenwerke Nomos Glashütte. It features a proprietary escapement, the NOMOS swing system, and a patented date mechanism with quick adjustment in both directions. To ensure top performance, Ahoi is finely regulated in six positions. Power reserve is 42 hours.
The escapement used by Nomos is designed in-house and known as the NOMOS swing system. This component is the heart of every mechanical timepiece, ensuring its accuracy. Only a handful of companies worldwide can produce this essential part themselves.
The Nomos Ahoi Neomatik 38 Date with the sapphire crystal glass back is priced at 3,820 EUR. For those on a tighter budget, there is also a version with the closed stainless steel caseback available for 3,520 EUR.
