Introducing the Mühle-Glashütte Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994

Mühle-Glashütte Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994

Mühle-Glashütte concludes its anniversary year with the Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994, featuring the newly developed large date module. All the details are below.

The roots of Mühle-Glashütte trace back to 1869, when Robert Mühle founded a precision mechanical workshop in Glashütte, producing measuring instruments for the local clock and watch industry. In 1994, Hans-Jürgen Mühle re-established the family company, focusing on marine chronometers and ship’s timepieces under the label “Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte.”

The 30th-anniversary celebrations began in January 2024 with the launch of the 29er Big BRONZE Edition 1994, followed by the S.A.R. Rescue-Timer Edition 1994 in April, the same month in which the modern-day Mühle-Glashütte was founded. The Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994, featuring the new “MU9424-GD” modular movement, is the fourth model to join the range of anniversary editions.

The new Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994 is available in two versions: one with a horizontally textured anthracite-blue dial and another with an ice-blue dial featuring a fine sunray finish. Both models are crafted from stainless steel with a 41-millimeter case diameter and a height of 12.6 mm. They offer a water resistance of up to 10 bar.

Both versions feature a prominent big date display at the 6 o’clock position, made possible by a newly developed in-house module. This module debuts in the automatic Mühle MU9424-GD movement, which offers a 41-hour power reserve. The movement can be admired through a transparent case back, with a special rotor showcasing a gold-colored 30-year anniversary logo as a standout feature.

The modular movement “MU9424-GD”

If you’d like to dive into more technical details about the new module, continue reading this part of the article. The MU9424-GD is the first modular movement from Mühle-Glashütte, featuring a newly interpreted large date module that allows for flexible positioning of the display on the dial side of the movement.

This new module leverages the existing drive of the date ring from the brand’s proven base movement. The standard date ring is replaced with a specially designed version, which is further expanded by an additional mechanism for displaying the first digit of the date. The new date ring in the MU9424-GD displays the second, or units digit (0 to 9), of the large date and is therefore also referred to as the “units ring.”

Powered by the base movement (in this case, an SW 200-1, Mühle version), the units ring advances once a day. Its design ensures it drives the tens star, which displays the first date digit (0 to 3), using four small teeth. The tens star features a driving mechanism on its reverse side for this purpose.

The module includes not only the newly designed units ring and tens star but also additional components necessary for precise date switching and the seamless integration of the large date module into the movement. These components include the module plate, a catch and catch spring, and a finely finished, specially manufactured movement retaining ring. The retaining ring serves as both a structural component of the movement and the back of the module’s base plate, ensuring precision and durability.

The models are equipped with a hallmark feature of a reliable Mühle movement: the brand’s specially developed and highly shock-resistant woodpecker neck regulation. After meticulous finishing and assembly of the components, each movement undergoes rigorous testing in six different positions to ensure optimal performance. The regulation process fine-tunes the movements to achieve an impressive accuracy range of 0 to a maximum of +8 seconds per day.

The Mühle-Glashütte Teutonia IV Big Date Edition 1994 is a limited edition of 155 pieces per dial color. Pricing is as follows: €3,200 with a crocodile leather strap, €3,150 with a suede leather strap, and €3,350 with a stainless steel bracelet.
