To celebrate its 160th anniversary, Zenith introduces the G.F.J., a timepiece that blends historical significance with modern refinement. Named after the initials of Georges Favre-Jacot, the brand’s founder, this sleek and elegant watch revives the legendary Calibre 135 – one of the most awarded movements from the golden age of observatory chronometer competitions. With its roots in precision timekeeping, the G.F.J. pays tribute to Zenith’s long-standing pursuit of chronometric excellence while integrating contemporary technical advancements.

A Legacy of Precision
Zenith has a long history of participating in observatory chronometer competitions, dating back to 1897. Among its many achievements, the Calibre 135 stands out as the most awarded movement in these trials, particularly in its 135-O version, which won consecutive first prizes at the Neuchâtel Observatory from 1950 to 1954. The movement was originally designed by Ephrem Jobin under the guidance of Charles Ziegler and optimized by watchmakers Charles Fleck and René Gygax.

In 2022, Zenith revived the 135-O through a collaboration with Kari Voutilainen and Phillips, restoring ten original movements. Now, with the new G.F.J. collection, the brand has fully re-engineered the movement to bring it into the 21st century while maintaining its distinctive architecture.
The Rebirth of Calibre 135
The updated Calibre 135 retains its original dimensions—30mm in diameter and 5mm in thickness—but has been refined with modern technology. Key updates include an improved barrel providing a 72-hour power reserve, an optimized gear train for better efficiency, and a redesigned balance wheel with regulation screws and a Breguet overcoil. A stop-second mechanism has also been introduced for precise time-setting. The movement now meets COSC chronometer certification standards, ensuring accuracy within +/-2 seconds per day.

Each component of the Calibre 135 is finished with meticulous attention to detail. The bridges showcase a distinctive “brick” guilloché pattern, inspired by the red and white-painted brick façade of the Zenith Manufacture. The barrel is adorned with a circular satin finish, while the crown wheel is black-polished to enhance its contrast. Large jewels further accentuate the movement’s refined craftsmanship.

Design and Craftsmanship
Zenith’s new G.F.J. watch combines vintage design with modern materials. Housed in a 39mm platinum case with a thickness of 10.5mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of 45.75mm, the watch maintains an elegant yet understated profile. The dial features a three-part construction: an outer ring with a guilloché “brick” pattern, a deep blue Lapis Lazuli center, and a mother-of-pearl subdial at 6 o’clock for the seconds display. White gold hands and hour markers complete the design, ensuring legibility while adding a refined aesthetic.

The watch is available with three strap options—blue alligator leather, black calfskin, and blue “Saffiano” calfskin. A seven-row platinum bracelet with embossed center links is also available upon request. The platinum pin buckle is engraved with the G.F.J. initials and the distinctive brick motif found throughout the design.
